Throughout my academic journey as a physiotherapy student, I have had the opportunity of undertaking a broad range of clinical placements across various specialties, including paediatrics, cardiac and respiratory care, acute assessment wards, community stroke and neuro-rehabilitation. These placements have not only provided me with a solid foundation in physiotherapy but also allowed me to develop a versatile skill set that is essential for a successful physiotherapist.
During my placements played an integral role in facilitating patient independence, guiding them through neuro-rehabilitation exercises aimed at restoring functional movement patterns. I also developed efficiency in my work by collaborating with multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) including occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and social workers to provide comprehensive care. This represents the CSP’s values of accountability and continuing professional development.
When necessary, I would refer patients to additional services, ensuring continuity of care and a holistic approach to their recovery journey. This collaborative approach aligns with both the CSP's value of teamwork and respect, ensuring every patient receives the best care possible.
I also have a level of assertiveness due to working in Rugby clubs, which involves loud personalities. Thus, it is important to acknowledge your presence and how your purpose as a clinician will help with your CPD, leadership, and confidence.
These are areas that I always look to improve and help me in the course of life.
In the future, I aim to to study neuroscience because I have a passion in understanding how the brain works, how certain neurological disorders occur, whether there are any treatment plans that could be put in place to reduce the effects of the condition and how physiotherapy can be a staple within this field.
Outside of physiotherapy , I did boxing for a few years, which taught me about the termination because you have to be willing to break through physical and mental barriers in order to complete a task that is physically draining, it taught me about discipline as I would go and train when I didn’t feel like training, and researching the combinations needed to become more efficient in the sport. All these actions gave me an edge against opponents when I was train or spar in the ring.
I also worked as a coach and tutor, building rapport with students, and young athletes, and observing their interests are very important, as engagement levels increase once you tailor the activities and educate them on the performance benefits.
I transferred these skills to my placement as it was common for children to disengage from the session. My leadership was always on display as I had to teach and lead students during small classes. These skills were crucial during my placement as I had to lead audits.
In conclusion, I understand that the journey will be tough, however I will always aim to tackle my challenges in order to become a greater physiotherapist that will aid the team.
